I was not expecting it to be so far from the first book, but enough ties showed up. I always thought I liked not to be biased going in. The quiet mitt with the “common as muck” name starts his life in the country and is forced to move to the city as the evil and ruthless earl of holand rises the taxes and they end with no money at all. What I love about it is that this one is one of three mostly standalone novels that can be read in any order – although I think it does work best to read them in published order rather than chronological.

However, Diana didn’t just put a warning or a lesson in there for young people – that they do not have to follow the direction they may be heading towards.

It’s an awkward relationship these three have, and it’s very well-written.

All in all, not Diana’s best. This one is a,met as well-formed as her later novels, being divided into four parts and pretty equal amounts of up and down time within, a little too much waiting and not enough action, and the action when it comes is a bit rushed and breathless. No one remembers why the ritual has to be performed, but no one dares to alter the tradition.
